Laura's family had kept hotels since the mid nineteenth century; Luigi's father was a floriculturist, and the citrus and almond trees still edging the property trace back to him. Three generations later the house has stayed in the same bloodline: the great-grandsons, Antonino, Marco and Luigi Esposito, run the 19 rooms today alongside their mother, Giovanna, each having come back to Capri after studying elsewhere. The rooms, spread across six descending terraced levels, keep the vaulted ceilings and cross-vaulted arches of the original house and lay hand-painted majolica tile, in the blue, yellow and green geometrics typical of old Capri interiors, across nearly every floor. Deluxe rooms add Jacuzzi tubs and walk-in closets; most rooms open onto a private terrace or balcony under bougainvillea. Dinner moves each evening to the rooftop, Mediterranean and Capri cooking with a light, modern hand, the Certosa di San Giacomo visible from the pool below along with the sea. Guests get complimentary access to the nearby Athena gym, and Annamaria runs the massage room for anyone who wants to end the day horizontal. The family also lets Villa Arabella, ten minutes up the hill, for those who want the same welcome behind a private front door. This is not a hotel that performs for its guests so much as absorbs them into a family routine several generations deep: the Espositos are on-site and visible, not delegated to a management company, and the staff talk about the island the way people do when they have never lived anywhere else. It suits a traveller who wants Capri's centre without its crowds, who will walk the ten minutes to the Piazzetta without resenting it, and who reads a hand-tiled floor as a fact about the house, not a design choice made for guests. You should not come if you want anonymity, a concierge who keeps a professional distance, or a hotel large enough to disappear into; with 19 rooms and an owning family that remembers names, distance is not really available here. You should come for a version of Capri that predates the yachts docked below the Piazzetta, for a pool that looks at a medieval charterhouse, and for the particular comfort of being looked after by people who inherited the job instead of training for it.
