THE PINK NOTEBOOK VERDICT
Archontariki Boutique Hotel
Most people who know Ioannina know it from having been taken there by a Greek friend, which is more or less how the best discoveries work. The city is the capital of Epirus, on the western shore of Lake Pamvotida, backed by mountains and layered with the kind of history that accumulates when Byzantine, Ottoman, and Jewish cultures occupy the same place for centuries. There are minarets inside a Byzantine fortress, a lake island reached by small wooden boat, silver workshops that date to the Ottoman empire. Archontariki is a restored archontiko, the term for the grand merchant mansions that once defined the city's prosperity, in the historic centre on Zalokosta Street. The building is stone throughout, with wooden floors, open fireplaces in the rooms, and a stone-paved courtyard that functions as the quiet heart of the house. The renovation has been done with a careful hand: there is nothing here that feels added for effect. Rooms are furnished with custom-made pieces, bathrooms have walk-in showers or spa baths, and some rooms open onto balconies facing the courtyard or the street below. The lounge fireplace, common rooms, and unhurried breakfast make it feel genuinely like a private house that happens to take guests. This is a hotel for people who want to be inside the city rather than visiting it. The castle, the Byzantine Museum, and the old Jewish quarter are all on foot. The lake promenade, the silversmith shops, and the meze restaurants of Stoa Louli are close enough to return to more than once. Zagori and the Vikos Gorge are an hour's drive. Two or three days here, done slowly, is the right amount of time. The short version: A restored Ottoman-era mansion in Ioannina's historic centre, with stone walls, fireplaces, a courtyard, and the kind of breakfast and staff attentiveness that make a small hotel worth choosing over a large one.
