A soap factory, then the private residence of a Scottish lord, Château de Théoule opened in spring 2024 in one of the quieter stretches of the Côte d'Azur, where the red rocks of the Estérel massif meet the sea between Cannes and Nice. Forty-four rooms and suites are spread across two architecturally distinct buildings: the crenellated château, with the character of something that has always been here, and the cleaner Art Deco villa, with soft romantic tones and parquet laid in chevrons. All rooms face the sea, and the best of them, the Panoramique suites, have private terraces over the bay. The Michelin-starred Mareluna, under chef Francesco Fezza, focusses on Italian, French and Japanese influences in a way that feels considered, and the five-course tasting menu is the more interesting choice. La Plage Blanche, the private beach restaurant, opens for lunch and alfresco dining under pergolas from June to September. The spa, carved into the Estérel rock face, has outdoor treatment cabins with the sea as soundtrack, alongside a Jacuzzi, hammam, sauna, and open-air Nordic baths. The train station is a ten-minute walk and runs direct to Cannes, Nice, and Monaco for days when you remember the rest of the coast exists. This is a hotel for people who find the bigger Riviera addresses too much: new enough to be impeccably finished, in a town still quiet enough to feel like a discovery, with enough on the property to make leaving entirely optional.
