THE PINK NOTEBOOK VERDICT
Carlton Cannes, a Regent Hotel
Constructed between 1909 and 1913 by Swiss hotelier Henri Ruhl, financed in part by Grand Duke Michael Mikhailovich of Russia and designed by Nice-born architect Charles Dalmas and Cannes-based Marcellin Mayère, the Carlton opened on 30 January 1911 and completed its current silhouette two years later, when the adjacent Hôtel de la Plage was demolished to make way for the building's defining western wing. The facade has been a listed historical monument since 1989, its twin cream domes said, by legend at least, to have been modelled on the curves of Carolina Otero, the Spanish-born courtesan known as La Belle Otero and the most sought-after woman in Belle Époque Europe. When the Carlton first opened, it offered 250 rooms with adjoining bathrooms and living rooms across six floors, a level of comfort so unusual at the time that it immediately established the property as the standard-bearer for French Riviera luxury. It opened for summer trading in 1928, the first hotel on La Croisette to do so, and launched Cannes's first private beach club in 1930, effectively inventing the summer season that the whole coast would come to follow. Today, under the Regent Hotels & Resorts banner since its March 2023 reopening, following a two-year closure overseen by architect Richard Lavelle, it holds 332 rooms and suites, including 72 with direct sea views, and 37 branded residences across two new wings to the rear, the hotel managed on a daily basis by general manager Giuseppe Vincelli. The renovation, led by interior designer Tristan Auer, expanded the footprint from 32,000 to 52,000 square metres through the addition of those rear wings, which frame an enclosed garden planted with 22,000 specimens and a hotel-record infinity pool. Auer's interiors draw from the Belle Époque archive rather than cannibalising it: Venini Murano glass chandeliers hang in the lobby, while the Grand Salon's original chandeliers were restored by craftsmen who had worked on the Palace of Versailles. A stratigraphic study during the renovation revealed magnificent onyx pilasters that had been buried beneath layers of paint, now uncovered in the lobby alongside marble columns and arches that were previously hidden behind partition walls. The 332 rooms follow a white-on-white palette designed to act as a canvas for the changing Mediterranean light; French windows open onto wrought-iron balconies with views of the sea or the Esterel mountains. The food programme runs to three restaurants, including the Riviera restaurant on the Croisette side with its open kitchen under Chef Laurent Bunel, Rüya for Anatolian cooking, Bar°58 (named for the address) serving seasonal cocktails behind a Raku ceramic bar top, a cigar lounge, and the Camélia tea lounge. The concierge operation has been led since 2003 by Maxine Nerkowski, who also serves as president of the Cléfs d'Or on the Côte d'Azur, a global association founded at this hotel in 1952. The Carlton is said to be the most photographed hotel in the world, drawing upwards of 6,000 photographs per day during the Cannes Film Festival, and this is the context in which you should understand everything about the experience of staying here. The building is not merely a backdrop; it is the set, the subject, and sometimes the spectacle itself. The suites are named for Grace Kelly, Cary Grant, Kirk Douglas, Alfred Hitchcock, and Suzanne Lenglen, among others, which either delights you or gives you pause, depending on your relationship with the mythology of Old Hollywood. The renovation is confident and well-executed, Auer having managed the difficult business of modernising a listed monument without reducing it to a theme park, though the scale and the IHG ownership mean that the 332 rooms carry an inevitable hotel-machine quality, particularly during festival season, when the property operates less as a hotel than as the Cannes Film Festival's most storied satellite venue. You should not come here in May, during the festival itself, unless the festival is precisely why you are coming, in which case you will find it incomparable. You should not come if you are looking for the kind of intimate, owner-run property where the staff knows your coffee order by day two. Come for the building, the history, and the specific pleasure of a Croisette balcony room in early spring or late September, when the light on the bay earns every cliché that has ever been written about it, and Nerkowski's concierge team can still get you a table at the right time and the right place. The Carlton is not trying to be anything other than what it is: the landmark hotel of the French Riviera, and on that particular brief, it remains, more than a century on, unrivalled. The short version: Opened in 1911 by Henri Ruhl, designed by Charles Dalmas and Marcellin Mayère, and restored and reopened in March 2023 under Regent Hotels, this 332-room Belle Époque monument on the Boulevard de la Croisette is the defining address of the French Riviera, listed, legendary, and entirely aware of it.
