THE PINK NOTEBOOK VERDICT
Cap Estel
Built in 1899 by a Russian aristocrat, Cap Estel occupies its own five-acre peninsula at Eze-Bord-de-Mer, a stretch of coast between Nice and Monaco that manages to feel genuinely removed from both. The property is entirely private, the restaurant reserved exclusively for guests, and the feeling on arrival, when the gate closes behind you and the gardens and sea open up ahead, is less hotel than house party at someone's extraordinarily well-located estate. Twenty rooms and suites are distributed across four distinct spaces: Le Cap in the original manor house, La Mer built directly into the cliff face with sliding glass doors onto private balconies above the water, Les Jardins set among the terraced gardens, and Le Parc for those who want the most secluded corner of the peninsula. No two rooms are the same, the palette running from cream and oatmeal in the larger suites to vibrant blues and whites closer to the water. Dining here is one of the better arguments for not leaving the grounds. La Table du Cap Estel under Chef Kévin Garcia has a Michelin star and a seven-course tasting menu worth the full evening, with the kitchen drawing on the aromatic garden and the sea in about equal measure. Le Ficus, poolside and informal, handles everything else. The saltwater infinity pool, heated and open from May to mid-October, sits at the edge of the gardens above the private pebble beach, and the spa has an indoor pool, sauna, hammam, and sea-view treatment rooms for the days when Monaco and Nice can wait. This is a property for people who find the performative grandeur of the larger Riviera hotels slightly overwhelming, and who want the feeling of having the coast to themselves. Monaco is fifteen minutes by car; Nice is thirty. The train station at Eze-sur-Mer is a short walk, and the hillside village of Eze, with Château Eza above it, is a few minutes in the other direction. But the pull of the peninsula is real, and most guests find the question of whether to leave genuinely difficult to answer. Short version: A five-acre private peninsula at Eze-Bord-de-Mer, built in 1899 and still operating as one of the most genuinely secluded addresses on the Riviera, with twenty individually designed rooms, a Michelin-starred restaurant reserved exclusively for guests, a heated saltwater infinity pool above a private pebble beach, and Monaco fifteen minutes away when you eventually feel like leaving.
