Mdina is called the Silent City because when the afternoon crowds file back through the main gate at dusk, it becomes one. The day visitors gone, the narrow baroque streets empty, and what remains is a walled hilltop city of 300 permanent residents, candlelit restaurants, and a quality of stillness that most of Malta cannot offer at any hour. The Xara Palace is the only hotel inside those walls, a 17th-century palazzo built for the noble Moscati Parisio family, its limestone walls forming part of the bastions themselves, perched above a panorama of the entire island stretching to the coast. The 17 rooms and suites are individually furnished with antiques, Parisian fabrics, and original paintings, each with views over the Maltese countryside or the city's baroque rooftops. The De Mondion, the hotel's Michelin-starred restaurant set within the bastion walls, is one of the finest meals on the island: modern Mediterranean cooking with a tasting menu that earns the view, which takes in the whole of Malta from a terrace built into the fortifications. The Xara Lodge below the walls and the Medina restaurant within the city complete a dining offer that gives guests little reason to leave.
