Cugo Gran Macina Malta
Most visitors to Malta cross the Grand Harbour by ferry to see the Three Cities and return to Valletta for dinner, which is a reasonable itinerary and leaves the better half of the experience on the other side. Senglea is one of the oldest of the Three Cities, a narrow promontory of limestone streets and baroque churches built inside the fortifications of the Knights of St John, and the Macina, the 16th-century harbour crane house that once lifted entire ships out of the water for repair, is its most extraordinary building. Cugó Gran converted it into 21 suites in 2018 and the result is the most architecturally dramatic hotel in Malta. The suites range from 40 to 130 square metres across six categories, all with vaulted limestone ceilings and most with unobstructed views across the Grand Harbour to Valletta's skyline. The interiors by Daaa Haus set Scandinavian restraint against the ancient stone: tufted wool rugs, limed oak, Carrara marble, lacquered raw steel, and bespoke Italian furniture, a combination that should not work as well as it does. The Little Bastion restaurant serves a modern Mediterranean menu informed by Malta's position at the crossroads of Arab, Latin, and Levantine cultures, with a wine cellar worth consulting before ordering. The rooftop pool, discreetly positioned above the annex, looks across the marina to Vittoriosa and Cospicua, and is the quietest elevated water in the Three Cities. There is no spa, but visiting therapists can be arranged. The ferry to Valletta leaves from two minutes away and takes fifteen minutes, which makes the separation from the capital entirely manageable and, on returning each evening, entirely desirable. The short version: Twenty-one suites in a 16th-century Knights of St John crane house in Senglea, with vaulted limestone ceilings, Grand Harbour views, a rooftop pool, and a Mediterranean restaurant. The most dramatic address in the Three Cities, fifteen minutes by ferry from Valletta.
Cugo Gran Macina is proud of its accessibility features, ensuring a comfortable stay for all guests.
Parking worries are a thing of the past with the hotel's secure parking facility.
Relax and unwind in the peaceful oasis of the hotel's outdoor gardens, a rare find in the city.
