THE PINK NOTEBOOK VERDICT
Hotel Locarno
A few doors from Piazza del Popolo, Hotel Locarno has traded on atmosphere rather than size since 1925, the kind of hotel Federico Fellini used to frequent and where Jack Kerouac and Elsa Morante later found what its owners call a wellspring of creativity. The family runs it: Maria Teresa Celli pieced the building back together room by room in the 1970s, after Nazi forces and then American soldiers had used it as a base during the war, and her daughter Caterina Valente runs it today, the sort of continuity that gives a 49-room hotel spread across five floors a personality larger than its size. At the retro-style bar counter, where the Financial Times called the cocktail programme the best destination for the perfect drink in the city, the room opens onto a secret garden on one side and an indoor sitting room warmed by an open fireplace on the other. Dining runs from early morning to late night across three settings, including the panoramic Terrazza Locarno, with the Trinità dei Monti skyline as backdrop. Rooms carry names like Suite Doge and Prestige Deluxe Matilde di Canossa, and keep minibars, air conditioning and safes as standard, with some adding balconies or garden views. There is a 24-hour gym in the basement, free bicycle rental, and pets are welcome for a small fee. This suits a traveller who wants Rome's literary history at the table with her rather than on a plaque outside, and who doesn't mind a building that wears its age. It isn't for anyone chasing minimalist design or a big international chain. What lingers afterward isn't the room, it's the sense of stepping into someone else's hundred-year story. Opened in 1925 and rebuilt from wartime ruin by the family that still owns it, Hotel Locarno sits steps from Piazza del Popolo, its bar once named the city's best for a drink by the Financial Times. It suits travellers after Rome's literary past, not minimalist polish.

Opened in 1925, Hotel Locarno survived wartime occupation before decorator Maria Teresa Celli restored its 1920s splendor in the 1970s, turning it into a haunt for Fellini, Elsa Morante and Jack Kerouac. Today her daughter Caterina Valente curates the property, keeping its century-old bond with art, film and literature alive.
