Perge Hotels, Adults Only Hotel
Cut into the cliff face at the edge of Kaleiçi, on Gençlik Mahallesi's 1311 Sokak, a five minute walk from the Roman walls of Hıdırlık Tower and the sixteenth-century Kesik Minaret, Perge Hotels occupies a stretch of the old town that most Antalya hotels only advertise proximity to. Sixteen rooms, most with sea-facing balconies and none of them identically arranged, sit above roughly fifteen metres of raw limestone that drops straight into the Mediterranean, a geology the hotel has made its defining feature rather than something to build a pool around instead. There is no pool. There is no gym. What there is instead is a private lift that descends through the rock to a sun deck and a roped-off swimming cove, an unglamorous piece of engineering that does more for the guest experience than most spa menus manage. The property is family-run, adults-only from eighteen, and has been renovated with enough care that longtime guests describe it as unrecognisable from what stood here a decade ago. Rooms run from Deluxe Doubles to a Grace Penthouse with its own terrace, each one individually decorated rather than pulled from a single template, with in-room safes, minibars and soundproofing that guests notice mainly because Kaleiçi's old town can be loud in July. The restaurant, Lanthe, serves Mediterranean and seafood-driven Turkish cooking with halal, vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free options built into the regular menu rather than bolted on, and breakfast runs long, with pastries and cheese boards guests are encouraged to linger over rather than clear quickly for the next seating. A hot tub and sauna cover the indoor relaxation end of things; the sea cove covers the rest. Citrus scenting through the public spaces is a house signature, one of the few overtly designed touches in a hotel that otherwise lets the cliff and the water do the talking. What it feels like is a boutique hotel that has correctly identified its one non-replicable asset and refused to dilute it with a rooftop bar or an infinity pool competing for the same view. The elevator ride down to the cove, sunbeds on rock rather than sand, water clear enough to see the seabed, is the kind of arrival most hotels fake with photography; here it is simply the amenity. It suits couples wanting a quiet, walkable base inside the old town rather than a resort compound outside it, and it suits guests who read "boutique" literally, sixteen rooms, a single restaurant, no entertainment programme, rather than as a marketing category applied to something with three hundred keys. You should not come if you want a pool, a gym, or a hotel large enough to disappear into anonymously, and you should not come if you are travelling with children, who are not permitted here at all. You should come if what you want is Kaleiçi on foot, in reach of Hadrian's Gate and the Antalya Clock Tower without a taxi, and a sea entrance that most hotels on this coastline simply do not have the geology to offer. The short version: A sixteen room, adults-only cliffside hotel in Antalya's old town, built around a private elevator down to its own swimming cove, with Mediterranean cooking at Lanthe and no pool to distract from either.
