THE PINK NOTEBOOK VERDICT
Georges Hotel Galata
Georges Hotel Galata occupies an 1882 townhouse in Istanbul's old European district, built for the Ottoman physician de Castro and later given a facade renovation by architect Han Tümertekin; step outside and the Genovese Galata Tower, standing since 1348, is close enough to see from the windows. Twenty rooms spread across seven floors keep the place small by design, each fitted with hardwood parquet floors, black marble bathrooms, rainforest showers stocked with Atelier Rebul amenities, and a Nespresso machine. That scale, and the French kitchen at Restaurant 24, separate it from the larger business hotels near Taksim; Georges is the one hotel in Turkey to have won Wallpaper* magazine's World's Best Business Hotel award, and it later made Condé Nast Traveller's Hot List and Gold List. Şişhane metro, two hundred and fifty metres away, runs directly to Taksim Square, so sightseeing days start on foot. Breakfast is cooked to order, two bars pour into the evening, and a rooftop terrace and garden give guests somewhere to sit without leaving the building. A doorman and 24-hour reception handle the details, and concierge staff arrange transfers, car rental, and tours. Couples drawn to a French-run, history-heavy address will feel at home, as will business travellers who want quiet over a busy lobby. Large groups will feel the constraint of only twenty keys, and drivers hoping for free parking will find the nearest option a paid lot at ten euros a day, with extra beds running ninety-five euros a night. What lingers afterward is the address itself, a nineteenth-century doctor's house standing a few steps from a fourteenth-century tower, both still doing their original jobs. Georges Hotel Galata is a twenty-room townhouse from 1882 standing steps from the Galata Tower, run with a French touch since 2011. It suits couples and quiet-seeking business travellers more than large groups, who will find only twenty keys and paid parking at ten euros a day.
