THE PINK NOTEBOOK VERDICT
The Bank Hotel Istanbul
Bankalar Caddesi, Istanbul's old banking street in Karaköy, still carries the ledger-stone weight of nineteenth-century finance houses, and the building that now holds The Bank Hotel Istanbul is one of them, its eclectic Ottoman-era facade unchanged since it was reworked into a hotel in 2013. Sixty-one rooms sit behind that facade, from a 215-square-foot Classic King up to the 893-square-foot Penthouse King Suite, each carrying air conditioning, a minibar and a safe as standard, with toiletries reserved for the suite categories. A Member of Design Hotels and folded into Marriott's portfolio, the property pairs boutique scale with brand-level backing that most of its Karaköy neighbours cannot draw on, and its rooftop restaurant, looking out over the domes and minarets of the historic peninsula, is the one view on this street that competitors simply do not have. Downstairs, a hammam, sauna and massage room give the wellness routine real substance, and a gym covers the fitness side. Business travelers get a conference hall, business center and event facilities; English and Russian are spoken throughout. There is no parking, so anyone arriving by car should arrange it elsewhere, and pets are welcome for a 50 EUR per stay deposit. Check-in runs from 3pm, check-out by noon, and an extra bed adds 20 EUR a night. This suits a traveler who wants Karaköy's gallery-and-espresso-bar energy with a proper concierge desk behind her, not someone after sprawling grounds or a pool deck. What stays with you is the rooftop table at dusk, the strait catching the last light while the old bank vaults sleep two floors below. On Bankalar Caddesi, Karaköy's old banking street, a 19th-century building holds 61 rooms behind a Design Hotels and Marriott address. The rooftop restaurant's view over the historic peninsula is the one thing this street's other boutique hotels can't match, though there's no parking on site.
