THE PINK NOTEBOOK VERDICT
The Fife Arms
In 1856, a newspaper advertisement in the Aberdeen Journal announced the opening of the Fife Arms in Braemar, promising a First-class Hotel stocked with wines and spirits from the best firms; within two decades Queen Victoria was stopping there regularly, and the habit of arriving with expectations has never quite left the building. The hotel sits in the centre of Braemar, inside the Cairngorms National Park, close to Balmoral and the River Dee, with Braemar Golf Club nearby. What sets it apart from the tweed-and-tartan hotels scattered across this stretch of the Highlands is the art, this is a place where Celtic tradition, aristocratic eccentricity and contemporary art collide, a mix that has earned it two MICHELIN Keys. The 47 rooms and suites are grouped by theme rather than tier: Scottish Culture Rooms, Nature & Poetry Rooms, Croft Rooms, the Artist's Studio at 312 square feet, and the 'Secret' Room at 323, each built for two. Evenings move between The Clunie, The Flying Stag, Gordon's Tea Room and the Fish Shop, or into Elsa's Cocktail Bar and Bertie's Whisky Bar, where the kitchens draw on local seafood, game and whisky from Scottish suppliers, gamekeepers and farmers. There is a spa, Albamhor, with treatment rooms and a private gym, and outdoor wellness that runs to wild swimming in the River Dee. Dogs are welcome. This suits a traveller who wants a story with her whisky, not someone chasing a quick city weekend or minimalist design. Check-in is at 2pm, check-out at noon. Few hotels this far into the hills can claim a Queen as a former regular and a contemporary art collection to match. The Fife Arms has stood in Braemar since 1856, with Queen Victoria among its early regulars, and today pairs that history with a contemporary art collection that earned it two MICHELIN Keys. Forty-seven themed rooms and whisky-driven kitchens suit travellers after depth, not a quick city break.
