THE PINK NOTEBOOK VERDICT
The Berkeley
On Eastbourne's seafront, The Berkeley sits close enough to Devonshire Park Theatre, the Heritage Centre and the beach that a walk before bed is a genuine option, not just a line in a brochure. It has thirteen rooms, which puts it closer to a well-run guesthouse than a hotel in the usual sense, though it keeps a lift, unusual at this scale and useful for anyone who does not want to manage stairs with luggage. On site there is a restaurant for evenings when going out feels like too much effort, a parking zone for guests arriving by car, and a press service for those who still like a newspaper with breakfast. Pets are welcome, a detail that rules the property in for some and out for others. Rooms are straightforward: a shower, a television, and a choice of double, twin or family layouts, some overlooking the city and one or two set on a higher floor for a better outlook. This suits people who want a base rather than an occasion, a couple happy to trade a spa menu for proximity to the theatre, a family wanting more than one bed without the scale of a resort. It will not suit anyone expecting spa treatments, tasting menus or a lobby built for photographs. None of that is here, and the hotel does not try to be something it is not. Check-in starts at seven in the evening, with a call ahead requested if arriving later, and check-out is at eleven the next morning, handled directly by the property rather than a switchboard. Thirteen rooms and a lift: small enough to know you, equipped enough not to apologise for it. Thirteen rooms on Eastbourne's seafront, close enough to Devonshire Park Theatre and the beach for an evening walk, with a lift built into a property this small and a welcome for guests travelling with pets. It suits a quiet base over a spa weekend, not anyone chasing grand lobbies.
