THE PINK NOTEBOOK VERDICT
The Sandpiper
The Sandpiper sits in a white sand cove on Barbados's west coast, a two-minute drive or five-minute walk from Holetown's restaurants and boutiques. The neighbourhood also runs into Sandy Lane Beach and Holetown Beach, both close enough for an easy walk along the shore. It's a member of Small Luxury Hotels of the World, and the scale shows: fifty rooms spread across three floors, an outdoor pool, a restaurant and bar, and gardens that keep the property feeling settled rather than resort-sized. Guests who play golf, tennis or want structured time on the water will find all three listed among the amenities here, alongside snorkelling, boating and bike rental for anyone who would rather explore than sit still. Those who came for stillness instead have a spa, a massage room and a hammam, a Turkish steam bath that few hotels on this stretch of coast bother to offer. Rooms range from a 400-square-foot Standard King Room with a garden view and its own balcony to a 1,400-square-foot Standard King Suite with the same balcony and considerably more room to spread out; both keep to private bathrooms and the basics done properly rather than dressed up. Families are welcome most of the year, with babysitting available on request, but the hotel does not accept guests aged eleven and under during February, so anyone planning a winter trip with young children should check dates first. Pet owners will need to look elsewhere. What is harder to fake is the pace: this is a hotel built around a cove and a garden rather than a stacked amenities list, and it reads that way from the first walk down to the beach. A 50-room cove hotel on Barbados's west coast, a short walk from Holetown, with golf, tennis, watersports and a rare hammam alongside the spa. It doesn't take children eleven and under in February, and pets aren't allowed, so check the fine print before booking.
