THE PINK NOTEBOOK VERDICT
Relais and Chateaux Hotel Heritage
In a Bruges house whose written history goes back to 1390, redesigned in 1869 by architect Louis Delacenserie and given a grand bank entrance in 1922, twenty-two rooms across four floors now make up Hotel Heritage, restored by owners Johan and Isabelle into a Relais & Chateaux property a few minutes' walk from Markt Square, the Historium and the Stadsschouwburg. Dinner is the reason many guests stay close rather than seeking a table elsewhere: chef Seppe Swinnen runs Le Mystique, working French and Belgian technique with ingredients pulled from further afield, and the bar Le Magnum keeps pouring until eleven. Down in what was once a fourteenth-century cellar sits the gym, a detail no other hotel in the city can claim, a floor below a sauna, steam room and Sothys spa for guests who would rather be treated than train. Rooms stay compact rather than sprawling, built around private bathrooms, minibars and blackout blinds against the summer light off the canals. This suits a couple marking an anniversary, in a hotel voted World's Most Romantic Hotel in 2019, or anyone who wants a place small enough that the staff know their name by the second morning. It suits families less well: the children's menu at Le Mystique starts at eight years old, and the historic footprint keeps rooms modest whatever the category. Green Key certification points to the kind of housekeeping that does not get shouted about, and a library and sun deck on the top floor give quieter hours somewhere to go. Bruges rewards walking, and from here the Markt, the Historium and the Stadsschouwburg are all close enough to reach before the espresso cools. A twenty-two room Relais & Chateaux hotel in an 1869 Bruges building, with a fourteenth-century cellar turned gym and dinner by chef Seppe Swinnen at Le Mystique. Suits couples and quiet travelers more than families; the restaurant's children's menu starts at eight.

The building tracing back to a 1390 mention was redesigned in 1869 by architect Louis Delacenserie for a bank branch before owners Johan and Isabelle lovingly restored it into today's boutique hotel. The layered history of Gothic and nineteenth-century detailing remains visible throughout the property's facade and public rooms.
