158 rooms fill four floors around a historic courtyard in the middle of Ghent, ten minutes on foot from Gravensteen Castle and a couple hundred meters from the Design Museum. Sandton Hotels renovated the building recently and kept that courtyard at its center, then built the rest to a Boutique and Design brief: rooms with minibars, espresso makers, 43-inch flat-screen TVs and rainfall showerheads, some soundproofed, a few done up as bridal or VIP suites. Downstairs there's a pool, a spa running massages and body treatments, a sauna, a steam room and a gym, plus a library, a garden, a terrace and bicycle storage for guests who came without a car. Lof Restaurant looks over the garden and runs a bar and round-the-clock room service alongside it; the buffet breakfast, served 6:30 to 10am, costs extra. A 24-hour business center, a conference hall and meeting rooms handle the corporate side, and families can book babysitting, though the hotel does not take pets. The pool and full spa are what separate it from the smaller design hotels nearby, most of which manage a sauna and call it done. It doesn't suit anyone chasing a bare boutique room with nothing but a coffee machine and a view, or anyone traveling with a dog. Check-in runs from 3pm, check-out by noon, and the courtyard is quiet again by morning.
