THE PINK NOTEBOOK VERDICT
Hotel das Cataratas, A Belmond Hotel
Evenings at Hotel das Cataratas arrive with the sound of the falls carrying across the grounds, the reward of being the only hotel built inside Brazil's side of Iguaçu National Park. That position buys guests early and late access to the falls, once the crowds who drive in from Foz do Iguaçu, 23 kilometers away, have gone home. The 176 rooms and suites, spread across three low-rise floors, lean toward old-world elegance rather than glass-and-steel polish, with mini-bars, slippers, and private bathrooms standard throughout. Two restaurants set the rhythm of a day built around the falls: a poolside grill for lunch and Ipê for something slower after dark. The Cataratas Spa, sauna, and steam room wait for the evening once the last light tour ends, and a gym, tennis court, and outdoor pool cover the rest of the day. Families get a kids club and a playroom, and children seven and under stay free sharing a parent's room. This suits travelers who want the falls as a genuine neighbor rather than a day trip, and who won't mind a mandatory national park entrance fee of BRL 104 added to the bill, or a security deposit of BRL 1,000 a day required at check-in. It won't suit anyone chasing Foz do Iguaçu's restaurants and nightlife 23 kilometers out, or arriving in winter, when the pool and main dining venue close for maintenance. What no competitor near the falls can claim: this hotel sits inside the national park itself. Stay the night, and you see Iguazu Falls after everyone else has left. Hotel das Cataratas is the only hotel inside Brazil's Iguaçu National Park, close enough to hear the falls after dark and see them at dawn before the buses arrive. Its 176 rooms mix old-world elegance with a spa, kids club, and two restaurants.

As the only hotel within Iguaçu National Park, the property has donated more than nine million reais to conservation, supporting the Onças do Iguaçu jaguar project that has helped the local jaguar population grow from eleven individuals in 2009 to around twenty-five today, hosting field research teams on its grounds.
