THE PINK NOTEBOOK VERDICT
Fogo Island Inn
The Inn stands on steel stilts sunk eighteen feet into the bedrock of Joe Batt's Arm, built by architect Todd Saunders to take the North Atlantic's worst weather head-on: a wind load rated at 22 pounds per square foot, nearly double what St John's requires. That engineering is the backdrop for something quieter: floor-to-ceiling windows in each of the 29 rooms framing ocean that changes by the hour. Every stay here is full-board, arranged around meals in a dining room built on local flavour, and rooftop hot tubs and wood-fired saunas for afterward. What sets Fogo Island Inn apart from other remote luxury outposts is where the money goes: it operates as a community-centred social business, and all of its operating surpluses are reinvested into the island's people, nature and culture, not into shareholders elsewhere. Guests spend their days kayaking, hiking, whale watching or learning bushcraft, and their evenings in The Shed, an outport Newfoundland tradition of shared meals around a communal table, or in the library and cinema, or studying work from artists who've completed residencies through Fogo Island Arts. Small-group workshops in watercolor, still-life drawing and found-object collage give guests something to take home besides photographs. Two suites and all public areas are wheelchair accessible. This suits travellers who want isolation with intention, who don't mind that the nearest airport is Gander and that a stay here means committing to the island's rhythm rather than a city break with a spa attached. It will frustrate anyone hoping for a quick weekend, since Fogo Island means committing to distance, not shortcuts. Few hotels anywhere can claim their entire business model exists to keep the place around them intact. Fogo Island Inn sits on stilts sunk into North Atlantic bedrock, all 29 rooms full-board with ocean views on every side. It exists to fund the island itself, reinvesting every surplus into the community rather than shareholders. Committing to reach it is the price of the quiet.

The Inn's Art Gallery displays works completed by artists during residencies through Fogo Island Arts, a related Shorefast initiative. The rotating exhibitions connect guests to the island's contemporary art scene, offering a cultural counterpoint to the surrounding wilderness and grounding a stay in the creative community that Fogo Island continues to support.
