THE PINK NOTEBOOK VERDICT
The Post Hotel & Spa
Breakfast at The Post Hotel & Spa runs from seven in the Dining Room, windows framed by the Pipestone River and the first light on the peaks of Banff National Park. The hotel began in 1942 as a ski lodge, built by guide Jim Boyce with logs hauled from Revelstoke and the headwaters of the Bow River. It took its present name in 1957, a nod to the Post Hotels of the Swiss Alps that British sportsman Sir Norman Watson, who bought the lodge in 1947, knew well from his own travels there. That history shows in the fireplace lounges and log construction, not a lobby dressed up to look old. Ninety-four rooms range from a 291-square-foot standard with two double beds to a 786-square-foot loft suite, with amenities running from minibars to indoor fireplaces. What sets it apart from other Lake Louise stays is downstairs: a wine cellar holding more than 25,000 bottles and 3,800 selections, recipient of the Wine Spectator Grand Award for 22 consecutive years, paired with a Dining Room named Best Food in the Americas by Conde Nast Traveler. Skiers get storage, passes, and a five-minute run to the lift; hikers, anglers, and riders get trails, a picnic area, and horses on call; Temple Mountain Spa and the salt water pool cover the rest of the day. Families get babysitting; the pub and piano evenings at Sir Norman Lounge lean toward couples instead. It does not suit anyone chasing city convenience: Calgary is two hours east, Banff forty minutes down the road. For those willing to drive, the reward is a hotel that earned a Michelin Key in 2025, one of only 23 in Canada. Built as a 1942 ski lodge on the Pipestone River in Banff National Park, The Post Hotel & Spa pairs 94 rooms with a 25,000-bottle wine cellar and a Michelin Key earned in 2025. Two hours from Calgary, it rewards the drive.
