THE PINK NOTEBOOK VERDICT
Monsieur Jean hotel particulier
Breakfast at Monsieur Jean starts by the tall windows of Le Bijou, watching rue Saint-Jean wake up over pastries, fresh fruit and cheese before the day's walk into Old Quebec begins from behind the hotel's big blue door. This is a 49-room hôtel particulier inside the old fortifications, part of Small Luxury Hotels of the World, one of the group's independent, sub-100-room members rather than a link in a chain. Rooms carry king beds dressed in soft cotton, heated bathroom floors, and a fully equipped kitchenette that lets guests cook their own meals, and some carry a private outdoor terrace, furnished in summer, a feature the hotel itself calls distinctive among its Vieux-Québec neighbors; others open onto partial views of the St. Lawrence River. A gym, a spa offering massage, and a lobby library with board games and a quiet workspace round out the days between excursions to the Dufferin Terrace, the Vieux-Port and the Citadelle, all reachable on foot. Come evening, Le Bijou turns into a cocktail bar with live jazz and piano on scheduled nights, tapas and shareable plates behind that same blue door. Couples on a romantic getaway, leisure travelers content to spend a few unhurried days, and business visitors using the conference hall will each find their rhythm here. Anyone traveling with a cat should look elsewhere, since only dogs are welcome and a fee applies, and anyone organizing a large conference or big group booking will run out of space fast in a 49-room house. What lingers is smaller than any of that: a terrace door left open in summer, and a kitchenette nobody expected to find in a hotel room. A 49-room hôtel particulier inside Old Quebec's fortifications, part of Small Luxury Hotels of the World, with a kitchenette in every room and a few private terraces its neighbors don't have. Mornings belong to Le Bijou's window seats, evenings to its cocktails and live jazz. Dogs welcome, cats are not.
