THE PINK NOTEBOOK VERDICT
Casa Pestagua Hotel Boutique Spa
At Casa Pestagua, breakfast is served beneath colonial arches in a garden that opens onto a courtyard built around a stone fountain, the noise of Cartagena's walled city fading at the door. The mansion occupies a corner of the UNESCO-listed old town, opened as a hotel in 1999 though the building itself dates to the 17th century, with the kind of high ceilings, marble floors and 19th-century antiques that make a stay feel closer to a private house than a hotel. There are only 11 rooms across three floors, so it suits someone who wants a small, quiet address inside the old town rather than a lobby full of strangers, and who doesn't mind that there's no parking (leave the car elsewhere; the streets here are for walking). The heated outdoor pool, spa and fitness room cover the basics, and the restaurant and bar handle meals without leaving the property, but what sets this hotel apart is Acasí, its own private beach on Barú island, a 45-minute boat ride away, where a handful of bungalows let you extend the stay onto white sand and turquoise water that most Cartagena hotels can only send you toward, not to. Staff work in English and Spanish, concierge and tour assistance can arrange visits to the fortress of San Felipe de Barajas or the cathedral in the old town, and free bicycles are available for anyone who'd rather wander the old town on two wheels. This isn't a resort with facilities to fill a week; it rewards someone who wants Cartagena's history at close range and a boat ride away from it when they've had enough of the heat and the crowds. Eleven rooms inside a colonial mansion in Cartagena's walled city, with a stone-fountain courtyard, a heated pool, and its own private beach on Barú island, a 45-minute boat ride away. It suits travellers who want the old town at close range, not those who need to park a car.
