THE PINK NOTEBOOK VERDICT
Al Moudira
Al Moudira sits on the west bank of the Nile in Luxor, near the Valley of the Kings and the ruins of ancient Thebes, about ten kilometres from the modern city center. Built in 2001 by Zeina Aboukheir with architect Olivier Sednaoui, the hotel is arranged as ten courtyards linked by domed passages, using timber, doors and stonework rescued from historic buildings across Egypt rather than anything built to order. Its 54 suites open onto these courtyards, each one different, with hand-painted frescoes, antique furniture Aboukheir collected over decades, and king beds dressed in Egyptian cotton linen. Meals draw on produce from the hotel's own farm, which supplies most of its eggs, dairy, poultry and vegetables toward a target of 80 percent self-sufficiency, served across settings from the Ottoman Hall to a dining tent overlooking the fields. Al Moudira was the first hotel in Egypt admitted to Relais & Chateaux, a distinction none of Luxor's larger resort hotels can claim. There is a spa with a hammam and therapists from Kerala, a pool shaded by palms, a library, and a fitness room, alongside a conference hall for the rare guest who brings work. Families will find a shallow pool and a playground, though the extra bed charge of 100 USD a night adds up quickly in the larger suites, and couples sharing a room should carry a marriage certificate at check-in. This isn't a place for anyone chasing nightlife or a quick turnaround between temples. It rewards the traveller willing to sit still in a courtyard and let an afternoon disappear. Built in 2001 around ten courtyards on Luxor's west bank, Al Moudira uses materials rescued from historic buildings and its own farm produce, and was the first hotel in Egypt admitted to Relais & Chateaux. It suits travellers who want stillness over spectacle, not nightlife or quick temple-hopping.

THE PINK NOTEBOOK VERDICT

Your taste already has an address

Al Moudira was founded by Zeina Aboukheir, who fell for Luxor's timeless charm and worked with architect Olivier Sednaoui to build a property part palace, part guesthouse, using local master masons and materials rescued from vanishing historic buildings. It opened in 2001 as a honeycomb of courtyards and gardens.
