THE PINK NOTEBOOK VERDICT
Villa Belle Epoque
Villa Belle Époque occupies a colonial house built in the 1920s on a 1,300-square-metre plot in Maadi, Cairo's leafy suburb founded in 1907 along the Nile's east bank, its garden thick with lemon, mango, olive and guava trees under centennial palms. Recently refurbished but still dressed in period detail, the property styles itself Egypt's first boutique hotel, a colonial villa converted into a 33-room property rather than built from scratch as a hotel. The rooms range from Deluxe Doubles around 484 square feet to Premier King Suites near 861, each with a private bathroom, bathrobe and slippers; none are flashy, but the scale favors guests who want space over spectacle. Acacia, the in-house restaurant, serves international dishes indoors, in the garden or poolside, a welcome break from hotel buffets. There's an outdoor pool, a fitness room, a business center, a small library and a sun deck, plus free Wi-Fi throughout and an airport shuttle available for a surcharge, useful given Cairo International sits roughly 30 kilometers away. The Nile is under two kilometers off, and central Cairo is a further 10 to 12 kilometers beyond that. This suits travelers who want a residential base with history and greenery over downtown proximity, and who don't mind covering ground by taxi rather than on foot. It does not suit unmarried couples hoping to share a room without paperwork: Egyptian law requires a marriage certificate at check-in, and the property enforces it. What lingers is the setting itself, a century-old private villa's garden, planted before the suburb grew up around it, still standing while everything else changed. A 1920s colonial villa on a 1,300-square-metre garden plot in Maadi, styled as Egypt's first boutique hotel, with 33 rooms, an in-house restaurant and a pool, roughly 10 to 12 kilometers from central Cairo. Unmarried couples should know Egyptian law requires a marriage certificate to share a room.
