THE PINK NOTEBOOK VERDICT
Village Castigno
In the Hérault hills of Languedoc-Roussillon, with the Pyrenees on the horizon, Village Castigno is not one building but a whole hamlet: colourful houses that the owners of Château Castigno spent several years buying up and converting into twenty-one design-led rooms scattered around a village square. From there, guests can walk between a bistro grill and wine bar, an Asian-inspired restaurant, and a gastronomic table, all a few steps from a 30-hectare organic and biodynamic vineyard. What sets Castigno apart from other vineyard hotels is underground: a spectacular wine cellar shaped like a giant bottle, wrapped entirely in cork bark and sunk into the hillside so convincingly that Le Parisien nicknamed it the Cathedral of wine and Midi Libre called it the most original cellar in France. This suits travellers who want their days built around wine, food, and quiet rather than a packed itinerary: there is a spa, a microbrewery, a shared pool, a garden and terrace, bikes for the lanes between houses, and rooms with air conditioning, room service and daily linens. It will not suit anyone who wants a single lobby, one set of keys, and constant entertainment; the culture here leans toward digital detox, and the property is spread across a working village rather than contained under one roof. Travellers wanting more privacy can book Villa Rouge separately, a two-bedroom house with its own pool a short walk from the centre, pets welcome. Parking, wheelchair access, electric car charging and multilingual staff are all in place, but the real draw is the history: a former property of the Knights of the Order of Malta, pieced back together house by house until a village became a hotel. Village Castigno turns an entire Hérault hamlet into a hotel, its twenty-one rooms scattered through colourful houses around a 30-hectare organic vineyard, with a wine cellar shaped like a giant cork-clad bottle that earned it the nickname Cathedral of wine. Better suited to slow food-and-wine days than nightlife.

Guests can unwind at the property's pool, part of a wellness offering that also includes a spa and an organic wine estate. Set within the scattered village accommodations of Château & Village Castigno, the pool provides a quiet counterpoint to the estate's wine tourism and gastronomic experiences, within walking distance of Assignan's historic centre.
