THE PINK NOTEBOOK VERDICT
Les Sources de Caudalie
Les Sources de Caudalie sits low across the vineyards of Château Smith Haut Lafitte outside Martillac, a single floor of stone and glass built in 1998 so that no room looks over another's roof, only vines and forest. Walk out after breakfast and you are already among the rows; walk back after dinner and La Grand'Vigne, the hotel's own restaurant, holds two Michelin stars under chef Nicolas Masse, the one thing few Small Luxury Hotels of the World members can claim. Fifty rooms and suites keep things quiet rather than grand, each with air conditioning, a minibar, a bathrobe and slippers. There is an indoor pool and an outdoor one, a spa tub, tennis, mini golf, and bikes for riding out among the vines, plus a garden that earns its keep. Families get a playroom and babysitting, and pets are allowed for a fee. The Caudalie Vinothérapie spa is one of the paid activities on site, a short walk from the rooms, worth knowing if the massage matters as much as the meal. None of this suits anyone chasing nightlife, a skyline, or a five-minute walk to a metro; Bordeaux's centre is twenty minutes by car, and the point of staying here is not wanting to make that drive very often. It suits a couple who would rather read a wine list than a room-service menu, and a family willing to trade a city view for a vineyard one. What stays with you afterward is not the pool or the spa but two Michelin stars sitting quietly inside a single-storey hotel among grapevines, a harder thing to pull off than another rooftop bar. A single-floor hotel spread across the vineyards of Château Smith Haut Lafitte near Bordeaux, with a two-Michelin-star restaurant most Small Luxury Hotels of the World properties cannot match. Fifty rooms, an indoor and outdoor pool, and a vineyard spa. Better for a quiet couple than anyone chasing nightlife.
