THE PINK NOTEBOOK VERDICT
Le Domaine d'Auriac
The drive off the ring road to Carcassonne narrows into a lane of pines, laurels and holm oaks, and the fortified silhouette of the Cité drops away behind you. Le Domaine d'Auriac sits on the ancient oppidum of Carsac, the historic birthplace of the city, three kilometres from Carcassonne's center. The estate has stayed in the same family for more than fifty years, and it shows: 21 rooms and suites, from an 18 square metre Classic Room to a 52 square metre Junior Suite Deluxe, open onto the golf course, the pool or five hectares of garden rather than a corridor. What sets Auriac apart from the château-hotels scattered across this stretch of Occitania is its own 18-hole golf course, laid out on what used to be the estate's vineyards, plus two kitchens run under one roof: the formal Bernard Rigaudis dining room and the wood-fired Bistrot d'Auriac, both looking over the greens. There's an outdoor pool, a tennis court, a billiards room, and trails for walking straight from reception. Pets travel here for 19 euros a night, and the concierge will book a taxi to the airport for 15 euros each way. This suits a couple who golfed that morning and want dinner without getting back in the car, or anyone happy to spend days among the pines and holm oaks of the park. It will frustrate a traveller who wants to step out of the door straight onto the ramparts, or who needs a lively bar scene after 10pm. With just 21 rooms and a family running the house generation after generation, service here still feels inherited rather than installed. Le Domaine d'Auriac sits on the ground where Carcassonne began, five hectares of pine and holm oak with its own 18-hole golf course and two restaurants under one family's roof. Bring a car; the ramparts are a drive away, not a walk.
