THE PINK NOTEBOOK VERDICT
Le Vieux Castillon
At Le Vieux Castillon, dinner starts with a walk: a small stone bridge crosses over the old village lanes to reach the restaurant, past copper lanterns and stone gargoyles left from the building's Renaissance past, while a lighter menu is served poolside for anyone who prefers to stay by the water. The hotel sits in the center of Castillon-du-Gard, close enough to walk to the Chartreuse du Val de Bénédiction, the Eglise Collégiale Notre-Dame and the Tour Philippe le Bel, and close enough to Avignon for an afternoon detour. It belongs to the Small Luxury Hotels collection and to the H8 Collection, and the details back that up: a Spa by Clarins with a sauna and massage rooms, an indoor pool and an outdoor pool suspended above the village and open onto the Provençal countryside, a library, a billiards room, and a garden terrace. Thirty-three rooms across two floors keep things intimate, better suited to a couple or a small family than a large group event; families get a playroom and babysitting on request, while anyone chasing a lively resort scene should look elsewhere. Rooms come in six configurations, from compact queens to suites with private terraces, most fitted with air conditioning, a minibar and a safe, so it pays to check the room description before booking. Staff move between English, French, Spanish, Arabic and Turkish. Pets are welcome for a small fee, and extra beds run 40 euros a night. What no other hotel in this stretch of the Gard offers is that suspended pool, its view running out toward the Alpilles. Le Vieux Castillon fills a cluster of restored village houses in Castillon-du-Gard with a Spa by Clarins, a suspended pool overlooking Provence, and 33 rooms across two floors. It suits couples and small families more than large groups, with a bridge over the old lanes leading straight to dinner.
