THE PINK NOTEBOOK VERDICT
Le Hameau Albert 1er
Chamonix-Mont-Blanc, and on a hectare of private garden a few minutes from the town center, the same Carrier family has run this hotel for five generations, more than a century now. Le Hameau Albert 1er still opens its shutters onto that view: coffee in hand, watching the town wake under the Aiguilles. Thirty-five rooms spread over three floors mean the place never feels like it's processing guests, and a doorman is there to open the door each time you step out. What separates it from other luxury addresses in the valley is what happens in the kitchens: Albert 1er, the hotel's own restaurant, holds a Michelin star under chef Damien Leveau, who cooks with vegetables from the property's garden, while a second restaurant, Maison Carrier, holds a Bib Gourmand and is frequented year-round by local regulars from Chamonix and Savoie, not only hotel guests. Between meals, there's an indoor and outdoor pool facing Mont Blanc, a hammam, a sauna and massage rooms at the Le Bachal spa, and in winter a ski shuttle and storage room that removes the pre-dawn boot scramble. Family rooms are available, pets are allowed for a small fee, and the desk speaks English, French, Italian and Turkish. This suits people who plan to eat seriously and sit still in a garden between meals, not those wanting a lively nightlife scene beyond the hotel's own bar, or a five-hundred-room lobby to disappear into. The extra bed costs thirty euros a night, a small tax on staying somewhere that clearly isn't trying to be anywhere else. Five generations of the same family run this Chamonix hotel, home to a Michelin-starred restaurant and a Bib Gourmand second kitchen under one roof. Thirty-five rooms, a pool facing Mont Blanc, and a ski shuttle suit guests who want quiet, not nightlife.
