THE PINK NOTEBOOK VERDICT
Hostellerie Le Phebus And SPA
In Joucas, a few minutes from Gordes, Hostellerie Le Phébus and Spa keeps its 30 rooms wrapped around a garden and a heated outdoor pool, the kind of setting where afternoons disappear without anyone announcing it. Two of those rooms, the Premium Queen Suite and the Junior Suite, come with their own private pools, a detail few hotels this size can match. The kitchen carries its own weight too: La Table de Xavier Mathieu, the house's gastronomic restaurant, is reason enough to skip dinner elsewhere, and reservations run through the Relais & Chateaux desk directly. That membership tells its own story: this is a property judged by peers rather than by any ratings chart, and it shows in the steam room, the massage treatments, and the doctor kept on call rather than the more common poolside menu of extras. Outside, there is tennis, bocce, mini golf, hiking trails and bikes for hire, plus airport transfer and a car rental desk for anyone arriving without wheels. Pets are welcome. What it does not offer is step-free access; the hotel is upfront that guests with mobility needs are not catered for, so anyone booking on that basis should look elsewhere first. This suits a couple who wants a serious kitchen and a private plunge pool more than a lobby to be seen in, and it suits someone who has stayed in enough resorts to know that a doctor on call means more than a spa menu. It will not suit anyone chasing a central address with restaurants and shops outside the door. Joucas is quiet, and Le Phébus is built for people who came here to stay put. A Relais & Chateaux resort in Joucas near Gordes, with 30 rooms, two private-pool suites and a gastronomic restaurant run by chef Xavier Mathieu. Good for a couple wanting quiet luxury and serious food, not for anyone needing step-free access or a livelier address nearby.

Le Phébus & Spa occupies a dry-stone Provençal farmhouse standing on grounds listed as a historical monument, set between Gordes and Roussillon. The Mathieu family has preserved the building's rustic character while adding refined interiors, so the exterior still reads as a genuine Luberon mas rather than a purpose-built resort.
Breakfast is served buffet-style with gluten-free and vegetarian options.
A spa with heated indoor pool, hammam and massage treatments is on site.
Concierge, laundry and dry-cleaning services are offered to guests.
Babysitting and childcare can be arranged on request.
