THE PINK NOTEBOOK VERDICT
Domaine de Fontenille
Morning at Domaine de Fontenille starts with mist over forty hectares of vines growing since 1638, the estate's own organic vineyard wrapped around a 17th-century Provençal bastide just outside Lauris, a short walk from Paul Cézanne's old studio and the Saint-Sauveur Cathedral. Few hotels build a stay around four centuries of winegrowing the way Fontenille does, with guided tastings, a Master Assembler session, vineyard picnics, and harvest mornings alongside the estate team when the grapes come in. The 25 rooms and suites, spread across three floors and finished in solid wood, linen, and stone, share a hushed, floral sensibility that suits guests who want quiet over spectacle, the property family-run under the Relais & Châteaux banner since 2016. Days move between the heated outdoor pool, open late April through October, the spa's massage and steam rooms, and La Cuisine d'Amélie, where the kitchen garden and organic terroir shape a contemporary Provençal menu. Thursday evenings in summer bring live jazz across the grounds, and the Rose Garden hosts open-air dinners over fire-pit cooking. Children have their own playroom and babysitting on request, pets are welcome, and the property is wheelchair accessible with a lift to every floor. Travelers curious about wine but not chasing a beach, a nightclub, or a resort's worth of facilities will find their register here; anyone after that scene should look elsewhere. Extra beds run 50 euros a night, check-in at 4pm, checkout at noon. What lingers afterward is not the pool or the spa but the vineyard itself, still farmed the way it has been for generations, right outside the window. A 17th-century Provençal bastide near Lauris, built around its own organic vineyard dating to 1638, with a heated pool, spa, and a bistronomic restaurant. Twenty-five rooms stay quiet rather than showy, and both pets and children are welcome. Better for slow mornings than late nights out.
