THE PINK NOTEBOOK VERDICT
Chateau de Fonscolombe
At Château de Fonscolombe, Sunday mornings open with a Qi Gong session rooted in ancient Chinese tradition, and evenings can end in a salon lined with hand-printed Chinese wallpaper, Genoa leather and Provencal gypseries, features original to the 18th-century castle the hotel occupies outside Le Puy-Sainte-Reparade, not far from Aix-en-Provence. Classified as a historic landmark, the building has been through a recent renovation by local craftsmen that kept its twin turrets and their green enameled tiles intact while adding modern comforts. Fifty rooms sit across three floors, and the largest suites run past 500 square feet with bathrobes, minibars and soundproofing included. What separates it from the other Provencal châteaux doing the boutique-hotel routine is the vineyard: the organic wine served at L'Orangerie restaurant is grown and made on the estate, not bought in. There is plenty to fill the days beyond the glass, a gym with a rowing machine built to sound like open water, a tennis court, an indoor pool and a seasonal outdoor one, and grounds holding 180 species of trees and plants. Children get a resident donkey, a playroom, a library and pony rides on summer Saturdays, so anyone hoping for total hush should look elsewhere on those weekends. Couples after a slow, food-and-wine-led few days away from city noise will find exactly that here. Pets are welcome for a fee, and the staff will arrange a transfer or a massage with equal ease. What stays with a guest afterward is less the spa list than the fact that the wine in the glass came from the ground outside the window. An 18th-century château near Aix-en-Provence with its own organic vineyard and a gym rowing machine tuned to sound like water. Fifty rooms, an indoor and a seasonal outdoor pool, pony rides for kids on summer Saturdays. Better suited to slow food-and-wine trips than total quiet.
