THE PINK NOTEBOOK VERDICT
L'auberge Du Cheval Blanc
L'auberge Du Cheval Blanc sits in the center of Lembach, a half-timbered village inside the Regional Nature Park of the Northern Vosges, about an hour's drive from Strasbourg. The building started life in 1822 as a coaching inn, and under chef Pascal Bastian, who has run the kitchen since 2008, its restaurant now holds a Michelin star and three toques from Gault et Millau, a detail no other 21-room village hotel in Alsace can claim. Dinner here is not an add-on, it is the reason people book. The hotel itself stays small and quiet, spread over two floors, with a garden, a sauna, a steam room and a spa for slower mornings, and a conference hall for the rare business trip that ends up here. Rooms come in three sizes, standard, deluxe and junior suite, each with air conditioning, a minibar, a bathrobe and soundproofing that matters in a building this old. Free Wi-Fi and free parking are standard, pets are allowed for a small fee, and check-in runs from 3pm. Ten minutes away, the medieval ruins of Château de Fleckenstein and the old Maginot Line give the afternoon somewhere to go before returning for dinner. This suits a woman planning a food-led weekend with someone she wants to impress, or a traveler happy to spend three days in one village without getting restless. It will not suit anyone chasing pool bars, late checkout, or walkable nightlife; Lembach closes early, and the nearest real city is close to an hour away. Book the junior suite if the restaurant is the point, which, here, it usually is. A 1822 coaching inn in the Vosges village of Lembach, built around a Michelin-starred restaurant run by chef Pascal Bastian since 2008. Twenty-one rooms, a small spa, and a garden keep it quiet between meals. Good for a food-led weekend, not for anyone wanting city nightlife nearby.
