THE PINK NOTEBOOK VERDICT
Logis de la Cadene
Logis de la Cadène sits on a small square in the heart of Saint-Émilion, the medieval hilltop village UNESCO listed as a World Heritage site in 1999, where the terrace looks across cobblestones and a wisteria pergola to the bell tower of the Monolithic Church. The inn has run on this spot since 1848, the oldest restaurant in the village, and that history now feeds a kitchen led by Thibaut Gamba, who earned a Michelin star in 2017 and cooks a plant-and-seafood menu that shifts with the season. The de Boüard de Laforest family, who also oversee the Angelus vineyard nearby, own and run the place, so the wine list comes from a family trade rather than a supplier catalogue, poured by a sommelier who trained under a former World's Best. Upstairs, eight rooms and suites carry the dates of that family history, 1544 through 2022, dressed in exposed beams, stone walls and antique furniture. A garden and terrace suit slow mornings, a library and billiards room suit slow evenings, and a playroom keeps children busy while adults linger at dinner. Reception runs 24 hours, pets are welcome for a modest fee per stay, and the property is non-smoking throughout. This suits a couple or small group who came for the wine and the table and don't mind walking everywhere, since parking sits off-site and the village itself is built for feet, not cars. It will not suit anyone chasing a pool, a gym, or the anonymity of a larger hotel. What no other Saint-Émilion address offers is that direct line to Angelus: an eight-room hotel that is also a Michelin kitchen and a grand cru family's own house. An eight-room inn on Saint-Émilion's medieval square, run by the family behind the Angelus vineyard and fed by a Michelin-starred kitchen. Rooms carry dates from 1544 to 2022, and evenings run to the library or billiards room, not a pool. Built for walkers who came for wine and the table.

The hotel sits on a small square in the medieval village, where cobbled lanes, centuries-old golden stonework and a wisteria-covered pergola frame an uninterrupted view of the bell tower of Saint-Émilion's monolithic church, giving the terrace and restaurant a timeless, storybook backdrop for a meal outdoors.
