THE PINK NOTEBOOK VERDICT
Les Pins de César
Les Pins de César sits in a valley near Saint-Jouin-Bruneval that a great-grandfather named César filled with a thousand Austrian pines in the 1900s, and the family who runs it still shapes the twenty hectares of gardens and thirteen hectares of woodland that surround the property's nineteen rooms. It is walking distance from the town center, with Plage d'Antifer, Stade Jules Deschaseaux and Fort Tourneville all within reach, and it reads less like a resort chain than an inherited house that happens to take guests. The Nuxe spa's twelve-by-five-metre covered, heated pool, sauna and outdoor Japanese bath are what separates it from other Normandy country hotels, and pets are welcomed here too, for a twenty-euro fee plus a security deposit of the same amount. Rooms range from a Deluxe with a freestanding double bath and thirty-to-thirty-five-square-metre floor plan to Garden Rooms that skip Wi-Fi and television on purpose, and a Chalet built for two double bedrooms and a children's mezzanine with its own kitchen and fireplace. That last detail marks the split: this suits a family wanting a self-contained house with garden access, or a couple deliberately choosing to be unreachable for a night, more than it suits anyone who needs a screen in the room or a beach at the door. Guests can hike the surrounding countryside, take electric bikes out, play tennis or petanque, or just sit by a barbecue basket in a corner of the park. There's a conference hall too, so the hotel doesn't pretend meetings never happen, even as the grounds argue otherwise. Check-in is at five, checkout at eleven, and the pines César planted still do the work he intended. Les Pins de César is a nineteen-room family property in a Normandy valley planted with a thousand pines by its founder, with a Nuxe spa, heated pool and sauna on site. Garden Rooms skip Wi-Fi on purpose; the Chalet suits families instead.
