THE PINK NOTEBOOK VERDICT
La Chartreuse du Bignac
La Chartreuse du Bignac occupies a single-storey 17th-century manor house outside Bergerac, in the Périgord Pourpre, where breakfast is laid on a terrace with a 360-degree view over the surrounding hills and vineyards, or carried up to the room on request. Brigitte and Jean-Louis Viargues restored the building room by room, and the result reads more like a well-kept home than a hotel: twelve rooms only, a library, a gastronomic restaurant and bar, and gardens that lead to an outdoor pool and a fishing pond. What sets it apart from other Périgord addresses is Le Moulin, a suite built into the property's old mill, its floor partly glazed so guests can watch the spring that once powered it still running beneath their feet. Bicycles are free to take out toward the vineyards of Monbazillac or the bastide villages nearby, and the spa offers massage treatments. Families get a playroom and a children's pool; travellers who need step-free access will find the restaurant and one superior room adapted for wheelchairs. This suits couples and solo travellers drawn to quiet, wine, and slow mornings, and anyone who prefers a small, family-run house over anonymous scale, since the team here works hard to stay warm, discreet and attentive rather than impersonal. It will not suit guests wanting nightlife, a large hotel's anonymity, or rooms above ground level, since the whole house sits on one floor. Pets stay for a flat fee, extra beds are chargeable, and the staff work comfortably in English and French. What lingers afterwards is the mill floor, and the sound of water that has not stopped moving since the building was new. A 17th-century manor turned twelve-room house near Bergerac, where breakfast comes with a 360-degree view of the vineyards and one suite has a glass floor over the spring that once ran its mill. Good for slow mornings and wine country walks, less so for anyone wanting a lift or nightlife.
