THE PINK NOTEBOOK VERDICT
L'Auberge Basque
Twelve rooms sit inside a former family guesthouse in Saint-Pée-sur-Nivelle, facing La Rhune and not far from the beach at Saint-Jean-de-Luz. Marion and Cédric Béchade redesigned every one of them, choosing burnt-wood parquet, furniture from Maison Sarah Lavoine and Alki, and custom headboards made by local craftsmen, then added a heated pool in the garden and put a Michelin-starred kitchen at the center of the place. That is the thing that separates it from other small inns nearby: dinner here is the reason people book, not an extra. Rooms run from a compact Classic Queen to a Junior King Suite over 500 square feet, each with a private bathroom, a Marshall speaker, and a choice of pillow firmness rather than a printed welcome card. Cédric cooks from named growers, a pepper producer, a breeder of Ibaïama pigs, a market gardener, a hazelnut producer, and closes the auberge once a year to run a public market so guests can meet them. The couple heat and cool the building with air-source pumps, fitted showers instead of bathtubs, and sort waste down to cigarette butts and cork stoppers. None of that suits someone wanting a large pool deck, a kids' club, or a lobby full of people. It suits two people who want a slow few nights organized around one serious meal, a library, a garden, and little else, with wheelchair access that reaches the restaurant itself and pets welcome for a small fee. Marion and Cédric call it welcoming guests home, and after a stay built around their kitchen and their twelve rooms, it is hard to argue. A twelve-room former guesthouse in Saint-Pée-sur-Nivelle with its own Michelin-starred kitchen, a heated garden pool, and rooms redesigned piece by piece by its owners. It suits two people wanting one serious meal and a slow few nights, not anyone after a big pool deck or a busy lobby.
