THE PINK NOTEBOOK VERDICT
Le Relais Bernard Loiseau
Saulieu is a small Burgundian town, and Le Relais Bernard Loiseau sits right in the center of it, close enough to the Arquebuse Gardens and the François Pompon Museum for an easy walk before or after breakfast. The name on the door belongs to the chef, and La Côte d'Or, his celebrated restaurant, is still the reason serious eaters plan a stop in Saulieu at all, and it is the one thing here that no neighboring hotel can match. The 34 rooms are spread across four floors, each decorated on its own terms, with minibars kept stocked and espresso makers within reach, along with the usual bathtub, room service and toiletries. Beyond the dining room, the hotel runs a genuine wellness and activity program: a spa with sauna, steam room and massage, an outdoor pool for warmer months, a gym, yoga, tennis courts, bikes for the surrounding hills, even a library and a mini golf course for slower afternoons. Families are covered too, with a playroom, a children's pool and babysitting on request, and pets are welcome throughout. Staff speak English and French, and the concierge handles excursions, laundry and dry cleaning without fuss. This is a stop for people organizing a trip around a meal, or around Burgundy's back roads on foot or by bike, not for anyone chasing nightlife or a city center buzz; Saulieu goes quiet early, and that quiet is rather the point. Parking is free and on site, Wi-Fi is free throughout, and check-in runs from 3pm. What stays with you afterward is simple: a small town, one exceptional table, and a hotel built around it. In Saulieu's center, Le Relais Bernard Loiseau pairs 34 individually decorated rooms with La Côte d'Or, Bernard Loiseau's celebrated restaurant, plus a full spa and an outdoor pool. It suits people planning a trip around a meal or around Burgundy on foot or by bike, less so anyone chasing nightlife.

THE PINK NOTEBOOK VERDICT

Your taste already has an address

Long before Bernard Loiseau, this roadside inn was Alexandre Dumaine's 'Hôtel de la Côte d'Or', a table so famous it drew Chaplin, Dalí, Picasso, Hemingway, Piaf and Colette. Dominique Loiseau later had the room bearing his name classified as a Historic Monument, freezing that era in place rather than letting it be renovated away.
The spa offers massage, sauna and steam room treatments by reservation.
The outdoor pool is open seasonally from June to September.
Babysitting and childcare services are available for families.
An electric vehicle charging station is available on site.
