THE PINK NOTEBOOK VERDICT
Casa Delfino Hotel & Spa
Casa Delfino sits inside the walls of Chania's Old Venetian Town, in a mansion the same family has kept for six generations since 1835, when a shipwrecked merchant named Augustin Preve settled here. The hotel opened in 1989 after wartime damage was restored, and it still reads like a private residence: 24 rooms and suites across three floors, each with its own layout and mix of period and contemporary furnishings, gathered around a pebbled courtyard where guests read or simply sit. Breakfast follows recipes the family has used for generations, local cheeses, olives, honey and freshly baked pies, with gluten- and lactose-free options on request. In season the roof garden opens over the Old Harbor, one of the few spots in the old town where a drink comes with that particular skyline. The main sights, restaurants and waterfront are a few minutes' walk away, the closest organized beach is fifteen minutes on foot, and Chania airport is 17km. There's a spa, steam room and massage on site, English and German are both spoken, and staff arrange transfers, car rental or a golf cart to the private parking a short walk from the door, useful given how limited parking is in the pedestrianised old town. This suits travellers who want history and a sense of place over resort scale, who don't mind walking everywhere rather than being shuttled; it will not suit anyone chasing a big pool or uniform rooms. What Casa Delfino has that its neighbours mostly do not is a single family still shaping the place it has occupied since 1835. A Venetian mansion in Chania's Old Town, run by the same family since 1835, with 24 individually furnished rooms around a pebbled courtyard and a roof garden over the harbor. Suits travellers after history and walkable streets over resort scale, not those wanting a big pool or uniform rooms.
