THE PINK NOTEBOOK VERDICT
Albergo Gelsomino
Albergo Gelsomino has stood at the harbor entrance of Kos town since 1928, when the Italian architect Rodolfo Petracco built it as a guest-house for colonial officials; today it is the only hotel in town with direct access to its own stretch of beach, its veranda still shaded by a pergola resting on the original hundred-year-old pillars. Eight rooms mean there is rarely more than a handful of other guests crossing the lobby, a space that once doubled as a meeting point for whispered deals long before it became a check-in desk. Parquet floors, marble bathrooms and deep mattresses carry the original character into the present, and blackout curtains keep the Aegean light from waking anyone too early. This suits someone who wants a walkable Kos town base with a private beach attached and no interest in a spa or a pool; it will frustrate anyone hoping for large-hotel anonymity or a sprawling breakfast buffet, since the restaurant and bar are compact and the place runs closer to a private house than a resort. A doctor is on call, the concierge arranges cars and excursions and dinner on the beach, and the property holds Green Key certification, unusual for a building this old. Airport transfers take about thirty minutes, and reception asks for arrival details in advance. Cash payments are capped at 500 euros under Greek regulation, worth knowing before settling incidentals. What lingers isn't the luxury language other hotels reach for. It's the sense of walking into a building that has been an officers' club, a television station and a tourist office before finally becoming, again, what it was built to be. Eight rooms in a 1928 Italian-built landmark on Kos town's only private beach frontage, with a resident doctor, Green Key certification and a concierge who still arranges dinner on the sand. Good for a quiet, walkable base without a spa; not for anyone wanting resort-scale buffets or anonymity.
