THE PINK NOTEBOOK VERDICT
Amandari
Each evening between seven and nine, a rindik, a Balinese bamboo flute, plays somewhere near the pool at Amandari, its sound drifting up to where guests sit over dinner or a drink in the bar and restaurant. It's a small, specific ritual, and a fair indicator of what this Ubud hotel is built around: atmosphere over scale. With only 30 rooms on a property dating to 1992, it runs more like a large private house than a resort, four kilometres from central Ubud and within walking distance of Ubud Palace, the Monkey Forest and the Tegallalang rice terraces. Days lean toward the garden and terrace, an outdoor pool, a spa with massage and sauna, a fitness room, a tennis court, or a hike arranged through the tour desk. A doctor is on call, which matters this deep into the rice fields. Families are looked after too, with a playroom, a children's playground and babysitting on request. Couples booking a shared room should know the property asks for a marriage certificate at check-in, a policy that will rule some travellers out and simply won't register with others. Meals run on rate-specific terms and may be limited during Ramadan, and current entry rules mean international arrivals complete Indonesia's SATUSEHAT health screening beforehand. English is spoken throughout, and staff handle transfers, laundry and dry-cleaning without much prompting. This isn't a hotel for anyone chasing a crowded pool scene or late-night energy. It suits people who want Ubud's forest quiet held at close range, and who don't mind that the loudest thing all evening is a bamboo flute. A 30-room hotel in Ubud where a nightly bamboo flute drifts from the pool to the restaurant, and a marriage-certificate rule at check-in signals exactly who it suits. Walking distance to Ubud Palace and the Monkey Forest, with a spa, tennis court and doctor on call.

Extra info
To prevent the spread of the Mpox virus, the Indonesian Ministry of Health has resumed health screening for international travelers (both Indonesian and foreign nationals) entering Indonesia from August 27, 2024. This includes completing an electronic self-declaration form called SATUSEHAT Health Pass, which must be completed on a dedicated web platform.
Balinese rindik music – played on a bamboo flute – is performed in the pool area between 7pm and 9pm each night. The sounds then float up atmospherically to where guests sit in the bar and restaurant.
