THE PINK NOTEBOOK VERDICT
Como Shambhala Estate
Como Shambhala Estate sits seven kilometres outside Ubud's centre, an easy trip from Tegallalang's tiered rice fields, Ubud Palace and the Monkey Forest, but built to feel apart from all three. Thirty rooms spread across a single floor, no lift needed because there isn't one, just single suites with private terraces and a one-bedroom villa set among gardens and terraces that thread through the property. Built in 2005, this is the estate that carries the name behind COMO's own wellness philosophy: a 360-degree program run by therapists who work toward measurable results, paired with a kitchen that keeps sugar, salt and additives out of the food by design rather than by menu note. Spa treatments need reserving ahead of arrival, and guests under sixteen aren't permitted in the spa at all, which tells you who this place is built for. There's a gym, a tennis court, bikes and hiking trails for the days that call for movement, and a library and picnic areas for the ones that don't. Two pools, indoor and outdoor, sit alongside a business centre and event space for the rare guest mixing work with recovery. One policy worth knowing before booking: couples sharing a room must present a marriage certificate at check-in, or expect a request for a second room. This suits a traveller arriving to reset deliberately, alone or with a long-term partner, who wants structure around their wellness rather than a spa bolted onto a beach holiday. It won't suit anyone hoping for buzz, nightlife, or a room with a view of anything but jungle. What Como Shambhala offers instead is unhurried specificity: a place built around one idea, held to for two decades. A single-floor wellness estate outside Ubud, home to the philosophy that gave COMO's spa program its name, where therapists work toward results rather than promises and the kitchen leaves out sugar, salt and additives by design. Note: couples sharing a room need a marriage certificate at check-in.

THE PINK NOTEBOOK VERDICT

Your taste already has an address

Como Shambhala Estate occupies a 22-acre natural sanctuary set within a riverine forest overlooking Bali's Ayung River Valley, just beyond the town of Ubud. The jungle setting surrounds the estate's rooms, villas and wellness facilities, giving guests a secluded, densely green retreat rather than a conventional town-centre resort.
