THE PINK NOTEBOOK VERDICT
Babuino 181 – Small Luxury Hotels of the World
The Spanish Steps are a ten-minute walk from the front door, and Piazza del Popolo is closer still, but Babuino 181 does not lean on its address to make the case. Twenty-five rooms sit across three floors, small enough that the front desk starts recognising faces by the second morning, which suits someone who wants a base rather than a lobby to perform in. It carries membership in Small Luxury Hotels of the World, a distinction its four-star neighbours in this stretch of Rome mostly do not share, and it shows in details rather than declarations: bathrobes and slippers in every room, a minibar, a flat-screen television, and a terrace with outdoor furniture for the hour when the city outside gets too loud. The bar and restaurant cover an evening without forcing a search for somewhere else to eat, and staff move between English, Spanish, Italian and French without missing a beat, arranging transfers, tours, laundry or dry cleaning as needed. An elevator and accessible features serve all three floors, and a family room and babysitting are on offer for anyone travelling with children, though pets are not permitted here. Costs are mostly straightforward, with a separate cleaning tax settled at the hotel and, as with other Italian properties, the possibility of gala dinner fees depending on dates worth checking directly. This is not a hotel for anyone chasing scale or spectacle. It works for someone who wants proximity to the Spanish Steps without noise, and who would rather a small staff know her name than a big one know her room number. Twenty-five rooms, three floors, and a walk to the Spanish Steps that barely counts as exercise. Small Luxury Hotels of the World membership sets it apart from its four-star neighbours, and the size keeps things personal rather than performative.
