THE PINK NOTEBOOK VERDICT
J.K. Place Roma
On Via di Monte d'Oro, a few minutes' walk from the Spanish Steps and the Trevi Fountain, a discreet entrance leads into what was once Rome's school of architecture, inside the seventeenth-century Palazzo Borghese. J.K. Place Roma turned that building into thirty rooms across three floors, and instead of assigning different areas to different designers, put one architect, Michele Bonan, in charge of everything, from the rosewood canopy beds to the Carrara marble bathrooms to the architectural photographs by Massimo Listri throughout. The result reads as one continuous idea rather than a set of committee decisions, which is rarer among Rome's boutique hotels than the marketing suggests. There's a library, a suite built around a decorative fireplace, a terrace, and a bar and restaurant that also handle breakfast and room service. Staff work across six languages and can arrange a doctor, a private check-in, or, for an 85-euro deposit, a stay for the dog. Guests who like knowing the doorman's name will find that here; those hoping for the anonymity of a large, business-hotel lobby should look elsewhere. Check-in starts at 4pm and check-out is by noon; an extra bed runs 180 euros a night, and cleaning tax is settled locally rather than folded into the room rate. The hotel is part of Leading Hotels of the World, and in the 2025 reader-voted rankings on its own site, it was named the top hotel in Rome and the fifth-best in Europe. Walk in and that tracks: considered, not performed. A 30-room townhouse in Rome's former school of architecture, entirely designed by one architect, Michele Bonan, near the Spanish Steps. It suits travelers who want a small, single-vision hotel with a doctor and library on call, not those chasing a big, anonymous lobby.
