THE PINK NOTEBOOK VERDICT
Palazzo Talia
Palazzo Talia occupies a former palazzo off Largo del Nazareno, close enough to the Trevi Fountain and the Spanish Steps that both are a short walk from the door, with the Pantheon barely five minutes further. Roman busts and Renaissance frescoes furnish the public rooms as a matter of course, and a display of 20th-century Italian art is currently being added, which is not something most five-star addresses in this part of Rome can say. Twenty-six rooms spread across three floors keep the place small rather than sprawling, better suited to travellers who want to be known by name at breakfast than to anyone chasing a lobby full of strangers. Downstairs, a hammam and Turkish steam room sit next to an indoor pool and gym, a genuine wellness setup rather than a token spa corner. Dinner runs through Tramae, the in-house restaurant, with a lounge bar for a slower drink after. Two Junior Suites are adapted for guests with limited mobility, and the ground floor, restaurant and bar are step-free, with lift access to the upper two floors. Pets travel too, for a fee. Staff work across languages and can arrange tours, concierge requests, or a spot in the small garden, and there is a business centre and conference hall for anyone folding work into the trip. A damage deposit and a separate cleaning tax apply at check-in, and parking is offsite and needs booking ahead, worth knowing before you arrive by car. This suits someone who wants a historic Roman address without the scale of a chain hotel, less so anyone who wants a sprawling resort with multiple restaurants to choose from. What lingers afterwards is the art, not the marble. The frescoed rooms and steam-room spa outshine the fanfare; twenty-six rooms near the Trevi Fountain, with an art collection still growing. Fine for those who want Rome distilled rather than displayed, less so for anyone wanting a resort-sized hotel.
