THE PINK NOTEBOOK VERDICT
Gaya Island Resort
Walk the garden path from the lobby past six Resting Chambers named for Sabah's indigenous tribes, and you already sense this is not a resort built for cars or crowds. Gaya Island Resort sits on Malohom Bay inside the Tunku Abdul Rahman Marine Park, Mount Kinabalu on the horizon, and the property runs entirely on foot, no vehicles anywhere on the grounds. That single fact separates it from the beach hotels lining Kota Kinabalu's coast: a five-minute boat ride brings you to Tavajun Bay, its own private beach, which doubles as the gateway to a Marine Centre rehabilitating sea turtles and restoring coral. Guests who dive or snorkel can go out with a resident marine biologist over the house reef rather than a generic guide. The 121 rooms are spread across just two floors, so nothing here towers or crowds the shoreline; villas open onto mangrove, forest or sea depending on which you book. There's a fitness centre, gym, yoga area and library for quieter hours, an outdoor pool, indoor pool and children's pool for the rest, plus a spa and massage room. Families get a kids club and playground; work groups get a conference hall. None of this suits anyone chasing nightlife or wanting to walk into a town for dinner. Airport transfer costs 140 MYR one way, and a nightly destination fee of MYR 30 per person applies on top of the room rate; couples sharing a room should carry a marriage certificate at check-in. Check-in is 3pm, check-out 11am. What lingers isn't the villa interior but the quiet insistence on keeping the island as it was before the resort arrived. An island resort inside a marine park where cars are banned, boats reach a private beach and turtle rehabilitation centre, and diving trips go out with a marine biologist. Not for anyone wanting town nightlife within walking distance.
