THE PINK NOTEBOOK VERDICT
Cameron Highlands Resort
At 1,500 metres in Malaysia's Cameron Highlands, the mountain air cools enough after dark that every room at Cameron Highlands Resort in Brinchang comes with its own indoor fireplace, an amenity almost no other resort in the country needs to stock. The building started as a 1930s cottage and grew through additions built in the 1970s, and it still sits within walking distance of Brinchang's town center, a location most hill-station properties don't manage. The 56 rooms range from Deluxe options around 398 square feet to Junior Suites at 549, most opening onto private balconies with mini-bars, bathrobes and slippers, and a two-bedroom suite for anyone wanting separate rooms under one roof. Dining rooms and the tearoom look out over the resort's own golf course, and afternoon tea with scones is served daily in the Jim Thompson Tea Room, named for the silk magnate who vanished on a walk near here in 1967 and was never found. There's a spa with massage treatments, a gym, a library stocked for rainy afternoons, and a conference hall with event and meeting facilities for groups who want cooler heads for their agenda. Staff run everything in English, from currency exchange and tour bookings to car rental and airport transfers. Couples booking a double room need to bring a marriage certificate to check-in or risk the booking being refused, and every stay carries a 200 MYR nightly deposit against damage. This suits travelers drawn to cool air, golf, history and a slower colonial-era pace over Malaysia's usual heat, and it asks little patience from anyone who reads the fine print before they arrive. Perched 1,500 metres up in Malaysia's tea country, this Brinchang resort gives every room an indoor fireplace, a golf course view and walking access to town. It suits golfers, tea drinkers and cool-climate seekers more than beach loyalists, and couples need a marriage certificate at check-in.
