THE PINK NOTEBOOK VERDICT
Eichardt S Private Hotel
Eichardt's occupies the same lakefront corner it has held since 1861, when a woolshed on the shores of Lake Wakatipu was converted into a hotel during the gold rush that built this town. The white stone façade now houses just fourteen rooms across two floors, a scale that keeps the front desk quiet and the staff genuinely acquainted with who is staying. Mornings start with coffee poured at a window seat overlooking the water, before a walk to Queenstown Beach or straight into the hills for hiking, or onto the ski shuttle once the season turns. In 2025 the hotel earned a Michelin Key, a distinction few properties in this country can claim, and it shows in details that do not announce themselves: bathrobes and slippers left without being asked for, fireplaces in individual rooms, soundproofing that means fourteen guests never feel like fourteen guests. Eichardt's Bar, where gold miners once traded stories, still anchors the evening, and The Grille offers a front-row seat over the water for dinner. There is a spa, a small fitness room, a library for grey afternoons, and staff who move between English, French, Italian, Spanish, Russian and Portuguese without missing a beat. This suits a traveller who wants heritage layered under comfort rather than a themed lobby, and who reads a small room count as a promise rather than a limitation. It does not suit groups too large for fourteen rooms, or anyone wanting a big resort's anonymity. Pets stay home. What lingers is not the view, though it earns its reputation, but the sense of a building that has been doing this since before Queenstown had marked streets, and still means it. Eichardt's has occupied the same Lake Wakatipu corner since 1861, now run as a fourteen-room hotel awarded a Michelin Key in 2025. It suits travellers who want history layered under comfort, not those needing large group room counts or resort anonymity. Pets are not allowed.
