THE PINK NOTEBOOK VERDICT
Taru Villas Kandy
Taru Villas Kandy sits in a manor built by Sir J. Cuda Ratwatte, a short walk from Kandy's city center and close enough that a passing train sometimes catches on the breeze from the garden. The hotel has only nine rooms, and one recent guest described being the sole visitors in a house staffed by nearly twenty people, so requests get handled without waiting in line behind other travelers. Every room comes with slippers and a television; the Standard category adds air conditioning, a mini bar, a safe, a hairdryer, and a bathrobe, and sizes run from a tight 285 square feet in the Deluxe Single up to 494 square feet in the Standard rooms. Breakfast, coffee, tea, and bottled water are part of daily service, and the restaurant serves local dishes from a verandah wrapped in garden. The pool is open from seven in the morning to eight at night, with a sun deck beside it for anyone who prefers a book to a swim. There is no elevator and no floors above ground level, so guests who need step-free access should confirm room placement before booking. An airport transfer can be arranged for a flat 150 dollars per vehicle, useful after a late flight into a town where taxis aren't always waiting. Concierge, laundry, and dry-cleaning run in-house, babysitting can be arranged, and the extra-bed fee of 50 dollars a night is worth knowing for families before they arrive. Pets are not allowed. This suits travelers who want a house rather than a hotel, and who don't mind quiet evenings once the pool closes at eight. A nine-room manor near Kandy's center, built by Sir J. Cuda Ratwatte and staffed by nearly twenty people. Expect garden dining, a pool open until eight, and no elevator. It suits those who want a house, not a hotel, and can skip lifts and late nights.
