THE PINK NOTEBOOK VERDICT
The Cavendish Hotel
A shower runs, a TV flickers on low, and outside the window Bakewell settles into evening five kilometres from the pull of Etihad Stadium, Whitworth Art Gallery and Manchester Museum. The Cavendish Hotel keeps things small: 24 rooms spread over two floors, the kind of scale where the concierge desk actually recognises returning guests rather than reciting a script. What sets it apart from the area's larger four-star competitors is the recreation list, fishing and hiking sit next to cycling, a nod to the fact that this is a hotel for people who came for the landscape as much as the town. There's a garden and a terrace for slower mornings, a bar and restaurant for the evenings, and a bridal suite for the occasional wedding party that books out a floor. Rooms are straightforward, a shower, sometimes a bathtub, a television, nothing overdesigned; the Spacious Double runs to 172 square feet with a full double bed, enough to unpack properly without living out of a suitcase. Breakfast is extra at GBP 19.95 a head and a 5 percent resort fee applies, worth factoring into the total before booking. Free Wi-Fi, free parking and a tour assistance desk cover the practical side, while laundry, dry-cleaning and ironing are handled without fuss. The property is fully non-smoking and wheelchair accessible, though pets aren't permitted, so this isn't the stop for a dog-in-tow road trip. This suits travellers who want a compact, well-run base with easy access to trails and museums alike, not those chasing a statement lobby or a rooftop bar. Check-in from 4pm, check-out by 11am, and a gift shop for the last-minute souvenir. Nothing here shouts. It simply does its job, quietly, and lets Bakewell do the rest. Twenty-four rooms, a garden, a terrace, and trails out the back door. The Cavendish trades spectacle for steadiness, better suited to walkers and museum-hoppers than anyone hunting a scene.
