THE PINK NOTEBOOK VERDICT
Pale Hall Hotel
Pale Hall sits above the River Dee outside Llandderfel, a Victorian country house built in 1871 and run today as part of the Relais & Chateaux group, a membership few hotels in this corner of Snowdonia can claim. Eighteen rooms are spread across three floors, some with their own indoor fireplace, and the largest, the Grand King Room, runs to 301 square feet with a private bathroom; the Classic Double is the most modest at 183. Outside, a terrace and garden face the valley, and Snowdonia National Park is a fifteen-minute drive away, close enough for a day of hiking or cycling without leaving before breakfast. The estate keeps guests occupied: fishing on the Dee, clay pigeon shooting, a library, a billiards room, a picnic area for slower afternoons. Dinner is served at Henry Robertson, the in-house restaurant built around British produce, and breakfast runs from seven to ten each morning; room service is available around the clock for anyone who would rather not leave their room. A massage room and a bridal suite point to two different kinds of stay, the quiet recovery weekend and the small wedding party taking over the house. Pets travel for a 25 pound fee, extra beds for 60 pounds a night, and late check-out can be arranged for 50 pounds if the morning does not want to end. This suits a couple or a small group who want a working country estate rather than a spa resort, and who don't mind that the nearest beach is over 50 kilometres off. Anyone chasing sea views or a lively bar scene should look elsewhere. Check-in from three, check-out at eleven; the fire stays lit. Built in 1871 on the Dee and run as part of Relais & Chateaux, Pale Hall keeps just eighteen rooms across three floors, some with their own indoor fireplace. Fishing, clay shooting and a fifteen-minute drive into Snowdonia fill the days; anyone wanting sea views should book elsewhere.
